Tax Day aka Ranch Me Up and Call Me Spanky Day!

Tax Season. It's fun, isn't it? It's where lots of people get large sums of money back from the gov'ment and not one penny of interest back. Please borrow my money and pay me nothing for it. That's why I never understood folks that liked large returns… It's lame.

Anyway, but that's not what this is about. This is about how single folks, like myself, get bent over annually, by the government simply for not being married. So, in honor of Tax Day, April 15, I am joining dozens of other bloggers who are writing about and expressing our frustration at what we considerinstitutionalized discrimination against single people.  Why Tax Day?  Because, some of the most egregious examples of unfair treatment against singles occur in Income Tax, IRAs, and Social Security laws, which all largely favor married people.

Now, there's nothing wrong with being married. I, too, would like to be married one day. Marrieds can be pretty fly, in fact! But I'm single. Guess what? There's nothing wrong with being single!! Yet I pay some unfair penalty at tax time because I'm a singleton!!! But it doesn't stop there.

What if you are with a partner and you want to put them on your medical plan. Many insurers don't allow this beyond an actual domestic partnership. Now, I know there's many exceptions to this. However, when I was with my ex and out of work, she tried to put me on her insurance. However, her insurance provider wouldn't do it. Damn the law!

In fact, there's an ass load of laws that favor married folks.  An unmarried individual earning around $80,000 per year can expect to pay over 1 million dollars more than their married counterpart. Don't know about you, but if I had a million bucks I'd bang two chicks at the same time. 😉

I mean, there's just some absurd shit that goes down when you're with a partner and not married. You ever try to combine your cable service? I did. And it was awful! But it doesn't stop there, kids. Hospitals can have your partner arrested for staying at your bedside. Hell, even if you're a married couple this can happen.  The point is that marriage as a defining factor for what we can and can't do and for how we're taxed is antiquated and it needs to change. We live in a much different world than we did a century ago. The laws need to catch up!

So, even as the number of single people continues to grow , I –and my fellow bloggers– are hoping to call attention to some of the ways the country needs to re-examine some of its laws that treat singles as “less than.”  We’re not.  #UnmarriedEquality #SinglesBlogfest
