Whether you are the breakee or the breaker, there's no way to get around it: Breaking up sucks.
Even when you don‘t like the person that much, breaking up sucks! It's uncomfortable and difficult, and the longer you are involved, the harder it is.
The worst part is that you suddenly have all this free time to dwell on the pain you're in. Whether your preferred method of mourning is eating an entire pint of ice cream, crying into your whiskey glass, sobbing in the shower, or burning all of the photos left of you and the ex (or deleting them all from Facebook–the ultimate burn!), you could always use a little music to soothe your mind.
Here are a few breakup songs that will see you through the bad days. Play them while you weep. Karaoke them after your good friends have gotten you drunk enough to forget your own name. Scream them as loud as you can while you drive down the highway. Let them be your catharsis, and get ready to move right on.
Many Shades of Black – The Raconteurs
Still in the middle of breaking up? Has this sorry, sad relationship become a ghost of what it used to be? The Raconteurs have got you covered. This one is perfect for crooning at karaoke. Rally the other single friends, knock back a few drinks, and shout the chorus on this one. (Also, Adele does a nice little cover of this song as well.)
The Park – Feist
One of the saddest songs about having expectations of a lover and knowing that he won't live up to them.
How – Regina Spektor
This is the perfect song for breaking up when the parties involved don't really want to, or aren't ready to give up that love. It's that bittersweet heartbreak, and that deep feeling that you get when you think that maybe, just maybe this isn't the final end.
Breakin' Up – Rilo Kiley
Not all break up songs are sad! Sometimes the overwhelming feeling at the end of a break up is relief, and that's exactly what the chorus of this song captures. Dance out that heartbreak and remember: You may be broken up, but that means you are free. And it can feel GOOD.
Yesterday Never Tomorrows – The Stills
This upbeat number is all about the back and forth of an inconsistent relationship while being in love.
Tears Dry On Their Own – Amy Winehouse
Perfect anthem for mourning and moving the hell on.
Barnacles – Ugly Casanova
“I don't know me and, you don't know you
So we, fit so good together
‘Cause I knew you like I knew myself
We clung on like
Barnacles on a boat
Even though the ship sinks you know you can't let go”
Your Ex-Lover is Dead – Stars
This was my jam after a torrid affair with a much-too-much older man that I worked with in 2010 (GOOD DECISIONS, PAST BETTY). Imagining a future when your ex is barely memorable, where the heartbreak you've suffered is so removed from who you are that it is barely a blip in your past, is a lovely exercise, and this is the perfect song for it. Also, I love that the lyrics acknowledge not being sorry for wanting something that the other person didn't want. Sometimes things don't match up, and it doesn't mean that anyone needs to be sorry.
Of course this list is hardly exhaustive, so tell me: What are your favorite songs for soothing a broken heart? Do you like to wallow in the sadness or do you want to pump yourself up to move on?
